KABIGURU RABINDRANATH TAGORE(1861-1941)

Rabindranath Tagore was one of the greatest literary figures of India. He was not only a writer and poet but also an educator, a great humanitarian and philosopher. He was born on the 7th of May 1861, at Dwarkanath Thakur Lane, Jorasanko Thakurbari, in an affluent family with culture at its core. His father, devendranath Tagore was an early leader of the Brahmo Movement, initiated by Raja Rammohan Roy, His mother was Sarada Devi.

Tagore wrote number of short stories, plays and novels throughout his lifetime. He received the Noble Prize in literature for his great work 'Gitanjai' in 1913. He was the first non-European to achieve this honour. Further, in 1915, the British King George V felicitated him with knighthood, which the pariot renounced in protest of the Jalianwala Bagh massacre in 1919. His song 'Ekla Cholo Re' created waves as inspired every revolutionary including the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi.

Through his writings, Rabindranath became the 'voice of India', spiritual and cultural heritage to the world. He started his educational experiments in Shantiniketan and sriniketan in Birbhum district. Here he initiated his dream project of imparting education.

Finally, remembered as 'Kaviguru' Rabindranath breathed his last breath on the 7th of August in 1941 at Jorasanko Thakurbari, leaving behind a legacy that touched the pinnacles of Bengali literature.

Born- Tagore  was born  in the Jorasanko mansion in Calcutta to Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi.
