Hooghly the place of rich history and heritage situated on the banks of Hoogly river is just 47kms north of Kolkata. The district is testimony to the rule of foreign settlers- Portuguese, Dutch and French with their historical relics and settlements spread across district. The Dutch and French have left their mark as historical relics in Chinsurah, and Chandannagar respectively, which even a casual onlooker cannot miss. Traces of the Germans and the Austrians can also be found at Bhadreswar. There are many places of historical interest in the district of Hoogly. Hooghly Imambara

Hooghly Imambara

One of the oldest Imambara of West Bengal and an architecture grandeur of 19th century structure at the banks of river Hooghly. The magnificent building dates back to 1861 which took 20 years for the construction. The two storied building houses several rooms and has a wide entrance, with the main gate flanked by two 80 ft tall towers and a massive clock tower between them. Top of the tower offers spectacular view of the surrounding areas and Hooghly river. Brilliantly carved walls, sculptured texts of the Holy Book of Quran, decorated walls with marbles, candles and lanterns, two massive pillars on the entrance and a massive ancient clock tower are some of the most captivating features of this place. The northern block of this building houses a mosque and the southern block has been dedicated to the grave of its founder Hazi Mohsin and his relatives.

Chandannagar is a small town situated along the bank of river Hooghly. This small town for over a period of 300 years has a unique blend of culture and heritage which is unparalleled in history. The city has been able to maintain a separate identity different from all other cities and abide by her own characteristics. The town was first ruled by Nawabs before the reigns was passed to French which established a French colony in 1673. Chandannagar has traces of various national and foreign influences due to its colorful and turbulent history. Chandannagar hosts many tourist places like Museums, the Strand, Churches, Temples, Rabindra Bhaban, birthplaces of many celebrities which are treat for the tourists and historians.
