Howrah is located on the western bank of the Hooghly River, opposite the city of Kolkata. The district is named after its headquarters, the city of Howrah. This district has a rich history that dates back to 500 years. Once known as the Manchester of Bengal, the city Howrah is an important transportation hub and gateway to Kolkata and West Bengal. The major railway station, Howrah station , situated here is one of the major railway station of the State and is easily accessible from various major cities of the country.

Located next to the Santragachi railway station, this is a huge wetland that attracts migratory birds during the winter season, particularly in the months of December and January. Gadiara is a small village at the confluence of the Hooghly and Rupnarayan rivers. This is popular amongst tourists as a weekend destination and for picnics. Amongst the other attractions around this place, the ruins of Fort Mornington Point built by Lord Clive and the lighthouse are the prominent ones. Another beautiful spot is Mayachar, situated on the sprawling bank of the Rupnarayan River.
