Nabadwip, a town in Nadia district, was the capital of Bengal under Ballal Sen and later Lakshman Sen, kings of the Sena Empire, who ruled from 1159 to 1206. In 1202, Nabadwip was captured by Bakhtiyar Khilji. This victory paved the way for Nawabs in Bengal. Nabadwip and some other places in Nadia were centers of learning and intellectual prowess. Krishnanagar

Krishnanagar

The district headquarters of Nadia, Krishnanagar is a place of historical interest. Earlier, Krishnanagar was named as Reui. The founder of the dynasty was Bhabananda Mazumdar and the capital was at Matiyari. Though the capital had been shifted at the time of Bhabananda s grandson Raghab, it was Raghab s son Maharaj Rudra who renamed it as Krishnanagar. In those times the Gop sect devoted to Sree Krishna lived in Reui. However, during the period of Maharaja Krishnachandra, Nadia saw prime development. As a regard for having participated for Clive against Siraj in the battle of Plassey, Krisnachandra was awarded the title of Raj Rajendra Bahadur. Numerous cannons are found in the premises of Royal palace which were given to him as mementos of the Battle of Plassey. History apart, Krishnanagar is also known for its clay modelling. On the bank of the Jalangi river at Ghurni, renowned clay artists are to be seen at work. Amongst clay modelling the skill in making extremely proportionate human figures has world-wide fame.

Mayapur is located on the banks of the Ganges River, at the point of its confluence with the Jalangi, near Nabadwip. The headquarters of ISKCON are situated in Mayapur and it holds a special significance to followers of Gaudiya Vaishnavism as the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who is regarded as a special incarnation of Krishna.

Nabadwip, originally Naodah city, a Municipality in Nadia district, on the western bank of the Bhagirathi River. The Bhagirathi River originally used to flow west of Nabadwip, forming a boundary between the districts of Bardhaman and Nadia. The city has multiple temples and is renowned as birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Ballal Dhipi

Ballal Dhipi

Ballal Dhipi is located near Bamanpukur Bazar on way to Mayapur at a distance of about 25km from Krishnanagar. It is a historic archeological site comprising of terracotta brick-based structures. The structures date back to 12th Century AD and are spread over an area of 1300 sq ft. with a floor made of sand and lime. It is named after Ballala Sena of the Sena Dynasty. Traces of a temple complex have been found at site.

Bethuadahari Wildlife Sanctuary

Bethuadahari Wildlife Sanctuary

Bethuadahari Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 1980, is situated in the Nadia district, beside NH-34 in the Nakashipara area. It is spread over an area of 67 hectares. This has a large population of Spotted Deer, Jackal, Bengal fox, Porcupine, Common Langur. Other species includes Parakeets, Indian Cuckoo, Barbets and other smaller birds and Pythons. Small Crocodile or Gharials are also found in this sanctuary.
