MOTHER TERESA (1910-1997)

The 'Saint of Gutters', Mother Teresa, symbolized selflessness in her dedication to the service to the  destitute the homeless and the dying. An Albanian Origin, the mother was born in the year 1910, as Agnes Conxha Bojaxhiu, in Skopje in Albania Now in the republic of Macedon (a).

A teacher of Irish order of Loretto Nuns, Mother Teresa moved to Darjeeling in 1929, she was later transferred to St. Mary's High School and became its principle in 1944. She taught geography and catechizer. But she was moved by the pathetic condition of the number of homeless people left stranded on the streets. She felt that her existence was futile within the sage confines of the Church Walls.

She requested the Pope to allow her leave the order and live as an independent run. In October 1950, Teresa received permission from the Vatican to start her own Order, which came to be known as the "Missionaries of Charity". Mother Teresa proclaimed that its mission was to care for the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all these people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for in society, people who have become a burden to society and are shurred by everyone.

The institute opened a series of homes including 'Shanti Nagar' (Leprosy Rehabilitation Centre), Nirmal Sishu Bhaban (Children's Home) and Nirmal Hriday (a hospice where the terminally ill could die with dignity). In some of the establishments the staff not only include nuns but volunteers as co-workers.

Mothers' hard work and selfless service towards the society was recognized and she awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in the name of the 'unwanted, unloved and uncared for'.

Mother Teresa, due to her deteriorating health condition was forced to step down from the head of Missionaries of Charity and the order chose sister Nirmala as her successor in March, 1997. But within a few months, 5 September, 1997, Mother died, just 9 days after her 87th birthday. On 19th October 2003 the Mother was beatified and reached the ranks of the blessed.
