Ancient temples, mosques, historic forts and magnificent handicrafts make Nadia district a great tourist destination. Nadia has gained as a tourist destination from the advent of the Bhakti movement and Sri Chaitanya. Nabadwip, a town in Nadia district, was the capital of Bengal under Ballal Sen and later Lakshman Sen, kings of the Sena Empire, who ruled from 1159 to 1206. In 1202, Nabadwip was captured by Bakhtiyar Khilji. This victory paved the way for Nawabs in Bengal. Nabadwip and some other places in Nadia were centers of learning and intellectual prowess. Several terracotta temples like Raghbeswar temple at Dignagar and Shyamchand temple at Shantipur adorns this place. Folk crafts like realistic clay models, conch products and sholapith products are the popular artforms of the region.

By Air: The nearest airport to the city is the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport of Kolkata, which is about 44 kms away from Nadia

By Train: The railhead of the city is known as Nabadwip Ghat station. Many local and express trains pass through the station. After one reaches the Nabadwip Ghat station, one will have to cross over to Nabadwip by boat.

By Road: There is direct road connectivity to Nabadwip from Kolkata. Direct buses, private cabs and reserved cabs are available from the city. Special buses from Kolkata also take tourists directly to the Mayapur ISKCON in Nabadwip

Shantipur is situated just ~100 kms from Kolkata in Nadia District. This place is very famous for its textile and textile products. The weavers of Shantipur have made themselves famous throughout India by their professional skill in making “Tant Saree”. After partition of India, many skilled weavers of Dhaka settled in West Bengal around Shantipur in Nadia district. Subsequently, the art of exquisite weaving flourished in the region and now finely woven feather-touch textiles and sarees have become the core attraction of this place.

The Raibenshe dance is an authentic folk-dance form of West Bengal which includes mock fighting and acrobatics. This folk-dance form of West Bengal is noteworthy for its varied expressions of military energy and depiction of martial arts. This dance is accompanied with wild yells of men and punctuated with gestures that suggest drawing of bows from the quiver, throwing of spears, wielding of knives and flourishing of swords. Music instruments like dhol and kanshi are used for this dance.

Kirtan is an act of praising the supreme source of divinity through various formats like singing, dancing, poetry and drama. In Bengali Vaishnavism, the devotion has been channelized through kirtan in true sense. When Sri Chaitanya arrived, kirtan had already become a well-known genre of devotional performance in Bengal. Sub-genres of Kirtan like padakirtan and palakirtan have become very popular in various religious functions.

Baul and Fakirs, also referred as the wandering minstrels and mystics of Bengal are known through their enchanting and enigmatic songs to express their spiritual beliefs. The districts of Murshidabad, Nadia, Bankura, Bardhaman, Birbhum are traditionally the principal centers of Baul Fakir culture. Their singing is accompanied by a musical instrument called ‘ektara’. Elements of Sufi and Vaishnav philosophy primarily combine their belief system. This Baul song has become quite popular and has received national recognition as well.
