Howrah is located on the western bank of the Hooghly River, opposite the city of Kolkata. The district is named after its headquarters, the city of Howrah. This district has a rich history that dates back to 500 years. Once known as the Manchester of Bengal, the city Howrah is an important transportation hub and gateway to Kolkata and West Bengal. Damodar temple of the Mandal family is situated in Jhikira village in Howrah . The temple was built in 1769 AD. Salagram Shila (nearly a round-shaped black stone idol representing Lord Narayana) is worshipped in the temple. The upper part of the temple is decorated with terracotta works depicting the notable event of Lord Krishna life and other amazing Terracotta designs and motifs. The decorated archway panel of the temple designed with the battle scenes of Rama with Ravana from the epic Ramayana.

The Rasbari Garden House in Belur, Howrah, is a heritage homestay. It is also well-renowned for its enchanting temple complex beside the spellbound Hooghly River. This attractive temple complex covers an area of several acres and is located next to Belur Math and Baranagar, on the bank opposite to Hooghly River. The temple complex, centered around the Radharaman Jew Temple, dates back to the late 19th century and was built by Purnachandra Daw. The temple complex houses a nabaratna (nine pinnacled) temple dedicated to Radharaman Jew, naat mandir along with a beautiful Rasmancha, six aatchala (eight roofed), Shiv Mandir facing the Ganges and two Nahabatkhanas on either side. It also houses a clock tower in the temple complex. After renovation works, this century-old Daw Rasbari turned into the Rasbari Garden House is providing homestay as an add on facility to experience the beauty of Hoohgly River and old legacy of rich architectural heritage of the temples, picnic and day out facilities to its visitors.

Anand Niketan Kirtishala under the parent body of Anand Niketan, was established in the year of 1962 in Bagnan, in the district of Howrah. Anand Niketan Kirtishala is a museum set up by the Anand Niketan officials with the intention of introducing the rural people of the area to the historical and cultural heritage of Bengal. In the museum, one can find the gallery of art, archaeology, history, fork art and craft of the southern part of West Bengal. The museum exhibits include terracotta plaques, free-standing terracotta figurines, toys, dolls, and ritual objects from late ancient period to modern times. The other attractions of the museum are coins, stone sculptures, votive terracotta seals, metal sculptures, jadu-pot and folk objects of timeless design. Nakshi Kantha (handmade designed blankets) of Bengal is another centre of attraction to the visitors of the museum.

Kalyaneshwar Temple is more-than-500-year-old Shiva temple situated in Bally, Howrah near Belurmath. The structure is about 400 years old and is said to have been started by the Pandavas and it was then continued by the Katoch Dynasty. It is very famous and visited by millions of monks and devotees around India every year. It is surrounded by Kali, Ganesh, Vishnu, and Bajrangbali Temples. According to legends, Ramakrishna Dev used to visit the temple frequently along with founder members of Ramakrishna Mission including Swami Vivekananda, Swami Brahmananda and others and offered puja to Lord Shiva. The famous festivals in this temple are MahaShivaratri & Charaksankranti. This ritual is still followed by the monks of Ramakrishna Mission.

Vivekananda Setu, also known as (Willingdon Bridge and Bally Bridge is a bridge over the Hooghly River in West Bengal, India. It links the city of Howrah, at Bally, to its twin city of Kolkata, at Dakshineswar. It is a multi-span steel bridge completed in December 1932 and was built to provide road and rail link between the Calcutta Port and its hinterland. The length of the bridge is almost a half-mile with 10 km approach roads on both sides. According to the nameplate on each girder of the bridge, the construction of the bridge was done by famous Kutchi-Mestri contractor and Industrialist Rai Bahadur Jagmal Raja Chauhan. The Bally Bridge was named Willingdon Bridge after Viceroy of India, Freeman Freeman-Thomas, 1st Marquess of Willingdon, who inaugurated it. The famous Dakshineswar Temple is situated on the banks of the Hooghly River near this Bridge.

Nivedita Setu is a cable-stayed bridge over Hooghly River in Kolkata, West Bengal helps downstream transport (from Kolkata to Bally). It runs parallel to and around 50 m downstream of the old Vivekananda Setu. It was opened to traffic in 2007. The bridge is named after Sister Nivedita, the social worker-disciple of Swami Vivekananda. The carriageway is supported by 254 pre-stressed concrete girders. Cables from 14m high pylons extend additional support. Nivedita Setu is the first bridge in the country that is a single profile cable-stayed bridge. Belghoria Expressway that connects the meeting point of NH 2 with NH 6 at Dankuni to NH 34, NH 35, Dum Dum Airport, and northern parts of Kolkata passes over the bridge. It carries six lanes for high-speed traffic. Nivedita Setu has won an Award of Excellence from the American Segmental Bridge Institute, USA.

Howrah Bridge is a balanced cantilever bridge over the Hooghly River in West Bengal. Commissioned in 1943, the bridge was originally named the New Howrah Bridge, because it replaced a pontoon bridge at the same location linking the cities of Howrah and Kolkata. The bridge is one of four on the Hooghly River and is an iconic landmark of Kolkata and West Bengal. It carries a daily traffic of approximately 100,000 vehicles and possibly more than 150,000 pedestrians, easily making it one of busiest cantilever bridge in the world. The bridge has an over-all length of 2150 feet with a single span of 1500 feet. The new Howrah Bridge was designed by M/s. Rendell, Palmer and Tritton, consulting Engineers. It took around 8 years to complete the bridge and 26,500 tons of steel including 18,200 tons of high tensile quality.

The headquarter of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission are situated at the west bank of Hooghly River in Belur in the Howrah district. Sprawling over 40 acres of land, these organizations were brought into existence by Sri Ramakrishna (1836-1886), the great 19th-century saint from Bengal who is regarded as the Prophet of the Modern Age, and his chief disciple, Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902), one of the foremost thinkers and religious leaders of the present age, who is regarded as ‘one of the main molders of the modern world’. It is a place of pilgrimage for people from all over the world professing different faith and religion. They are engaged with various forms of humanitarian, social service activities and serve millions of men, women, and children, without any distinction of caste, religion or race. The room where Swami Vivekananda attained Mahasamadhi has been preserved and his memorial also lies within the math. People from all over the world come to enjoy its peaceful and calm atmosphere and pay homage.

The Indian Botanic Garden, previously known as Royal Botanic Garden, is comprised of approximately 290 acres of land (~1000 bighas) and lies on the bank of the River Hooghly. This botanic garden is popular because of ‘The Great Banyan tree’ which is more than 330 m in circumference. This garden is popular not only for the banyan tree but also for the myriad of plants. This botanic garden is considered to be the lungs of the highly industrial and urbanized city of Howrah. Banning the usage of plastic materials on the campus has rightly preserved and protected this garden. Beside the Great Banyan tree, there is a fair collection of rare indigenous and exotic plants, beautiful amazon lilies, climbing plants, varieties of palm, delicate orchids and all sorts of large trees - mahogany, teak, walnut, etc. Because of such unique characteristics, this garden is a popular spot for picnics and school excursions. Besides the Banyan tree, other popular buildings which are worth a visit are Wallich’s monument, Griffiths Monument, Jack’s Monument and Kurze’s Monument.

Popularly also known as the ‘Second Hooghly Bridge’, Vidyasagar Setu is the longest cable-stayed bridge in India built over the Hooghly River in West Bengal. With a length of 458 m and 115 m wide, this was originally built to reduce the traffic on Howrah Bridge. This bridge was named after Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar who was an educationist reformer and a key contributor to the Bengal Renaissance. The bridge carries the Kona Expressway (or NH 117) and connects Howrah to Kolkata. The mesmerizing view of this bridge from the Hooghly River has resulted in a lot of movie shootings with the bridge as a backdrop.

It was the home of the immortal Bengali novelist Sri Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. He has spent twelve years (1926-1938) of his literary life in this place before permanently settling in Kolkata. His two-storied dwelling house in Panitras or Samtaber village on the bank of the river Rupnarayan serves as a perfect destination for anyone who wants to experience rural villages. Though he was a Bengali writer, his great novels and short stories dealing human emotions are translated in almost all major languages of India. The building is now preserved as a museum where mementoes such as his table, chair, chappals, stick, bed, writing tables are kept. Various copies of his works (books), some manuscripts and personal letters are also displayed in the museum. During his stay here, he had created some of his finest stories and novels such as Abagir Swarga, Bamuner Meye, Palli Samaj, Ramer Sumati, Mahesh, Srikanta (4th art).

Gadiara is a small village at the confluence of the Hooghly and Rupnarayan rivers. This is popular amongst tourists as a weekend destination and for picnics. If you want to experience the unique pallete of colours across the sky, then, witnessing sunrise and sunset at the confluence of the rivers at Gadiara is the perfect place for you. Amongst the other attractions around this place, the ruins of Fort Mornington Point built by Lord Clive and the lighthouse are the prominent ones. Another beautiful spot is Mayachar, situated on the sprawling bank of the Rupnarayan River. The miles of green meadows and a meandering river present a pleasant setting to take a break for a day or two.
