Chandannagar is a small town situated along the bank of river Hooghly. This small town for over a period of 300 years has a unique blend of culture and heritage which is unparalleled in history. The place has been able to maintain a separate identity different from all other cities and abide by her own characteristics. The town was first ruled by Nawabs before the reigns was passed to French which established a French colony in 1673. Unlike Bandel, Chinsurah and Serampore, Chandannagar still has a lot of French heritage. Chandannagar was a French colony till 1950 and French is still taught as a third language in many of Chandannagar's schools.
The Chandannagar Strand is considered as the most beautiful stretch of the Hooghly and still houses a few French mansions. Durgacharan Rakshit Ghat on the Strand is an interesting mix of Indo - French architecture. Also on the Strand is the Duplex's Museum, housing a French Museum. Just off The Strand, is the Sacred Heart Church, one of the prime attractions of Chandannagar. The church interior has beautiful-stained glasses. Apart from that, Chandannagar hosts many tourist places like Museums, Churches, Temples, Rabindra Bhaban, birthplaces of many celebrities which are treat for the tourists and historians. Tourists can also head to Patal Bari, literally meaning the underground house. The striking feature of this house is that its lowest floor remains submerged in the Ganges. WBTC ‘European Settlement Boat Ride’ a long day cruise starts from Millennium Park (at 10am) and travels to Danish Serampore (now Srirampur) and French Chandannagar. The boat returns to Kolkata around 9pm.
