Singalila National Park is located at an altitude of more than 7000 feet above the sea and is the highest national park in West Bengal. The park was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1986 and was made an Indian National Park in 1992.

Sandakphu and Phalut, two of the highest peaks in West Bengal, are located right inside the park. The national park encompasses a beautiful, 78.60 sq km land of virgin rhododendron forests, alpine valley and rare species of animals and orchids. It is most famous for offering the breathtaking and spectacular view of the Himalayan peak and providing a panoramic view of the gigantic Himalayas Range spanning from Nepal to Bhutan.

Singalila is home to the very rare and exotic red panda and the Himalayan black bear. The national park is also part of a trekking route and is no less than a paradise for trekkers and adventure lovers.

By Rail: The domestic railway stations near to the national park are the Jalpaiguri Railway station and the Siliguri Railway Station.

By Air: The nearest airport is the Bagdogra Airport.

By Road: Singalila National Park is well connected to Major Cities and Places by road network. There are several government and privately operated vehicles that go to Singalila National Park. Bus services are available from Siliguri to Maneybhanjan via Sukhiapokhri.

Sandakphu is the highest mountain peak situated in the Singalila region of Darjeeling district. The peak is located at the edge of the Singalila National Park and four of the five highest peaks in the world such as Everest, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse and Makalu can be seen from its summit. One can get a spectacular view of Mount Kanchenjunga from Sandakphu. A long stretch of Himalayan range starting from Bhutan is also visible from this place. This is a true paradise for adventure lovers. Tourists can avail large number of adventure activities such as trekking, bike riding, mountain climbing, wildlife safari, camping, rock climbing and paragliding. River rafting on the thundering Teesta river is also a great option for adventure lovers. As the first sunlight strikes, tourists can see the dazzling peaks of the Everest family in Nepal at the far west including the gorgeous Mt. Everest. Tourists can find it along with other peaks like Lhotse and Mt. Makalu. From Sandakphu, tourists can get to see the panoramic view of Kanchenjunga and other peaks close to Kanchenjunga like Kabru, Kumbhakarna and Pandim.

Tumling is a tiny village and this is on the way to the popular trekker’s destination, Sandakphu. Only 12 to 15 Nepali families live here and there are small huts and private lodges which cater to trekkers and tourists heading towards Sandakphu. This place is famous for lovely views of Singalila and the Kanchenjunga range. The lights of the towns of Darjeeling, Kurseong, Pasupati (Nepal), Siliguri and other settlements can be viewed on a clear night

Tonglu is one of the higher peaks of the Singalila Ridge and a small settlement inside the Singalila National Park in the Darjeeling subdivision, Darjeeling district. It is a roadside halt along the trekking route from Manebhanjan to Sandakphu. Tourists can stay at small trekkers huts and can enjoy the serene beauty and the splendid view of Mount Kanchenjunga. The changing colors of the peaks during the sunrise is definitely a visual treat for tourists.

Chitre, a small village, is located at an altitude of 8,340 ft and about 3 kms from Manebhanjan. The route up to Chitre passes through pine, fir, birch forests and bamboo glades. The 1.5 hours trekking route from Manebhanjan is considered one of the steepest in the entire range of Sandakphu. Chitrey Monastery is one of the major attractions from where tourists can get a mesmerizing view of the snow-peaked Kanchenjunga

Tourists can reach from Tumling to Sandakphu via Gairibas. From Tumling, upto Jhaubari is a gradual descend and this route is relatively easier for trekking. But after Jhaubari, it is a steep descend upto Gairibas. Trekkers usually halt at Gairibas. Gairibas is a valley full of bamboo grooves. Small huts and cottages are available for trekkers. There is a tea stall where dormitory beds are available for trekkers. Trekkers can enjoy tasty breakfast here. Apart from trekking, cinconna and pine trees are the major attractions of this place

manebhanjan

Manebhanjan is a small village located about 26 km from Darjeeling, 92 km from Siliguri, and on the border of India and Nepal at an altitude of 7,054 ft. This is the place from where the popular Sandakphu trekking starts. This is the gateway towards the Singalila National Park. This place provides all the essential items and homestay facilities to trekkers. This is the only place in Darjeeling to have a large collection of vintage 1950’s Land Rover car.

Chitrey is the small settlement of Lamey Dhura. Between Chitrey and Lamedhura one has to trek through a ridge. It is located at an altitude of 8,792 ft between Chitre and Meghma. Lamey Dhura is on the way to Sandakphu and a small number of Tibetan families stay here. They earn their livelihood by selling tea and snack items to trekkers.

The name Meghma has been derived from ‘megh’ which means cloud. This mountain village is located on the Singalila ridge at an altitude of 9,514 ft. Meghma is located on the route to Sandakphu and the trail bifurcates at Meghma. The right uphill route leads to the trekkers at Tonglu. The trail in the left passes through Nepal. The roads meet again at Tumling. There is a large SSB (Security Agency) camp at Meghma, there is also a monastery and a primary school. Small cottage/tea house is also located at this area to cater to trekkers

Srikhola is a small mountain village located about 87 km from Darjeeling town and at an altitude of 6,900 ft. Trekking trails from Sandakphu and Phalut descend through Srikhola and came down to Manebhanjan. The forest of magnolia, chestnuts, oaks, birches, pines and rhododendrons surround this area. A river flowing through this area enhances the beauty of this place. Trekkers can stay at Srikhola and enjoy the scenic beauty of the surroundings. The advantage of staying at Srikhola is, trekkers can start early next morning, walk down to Rimbik and catch a shared jeep for Darjeeling or Siliguri.

phalut

Phalut is the second highest peak of West Bengal. It is located inside the Singalila National Park, which is near the West Bengal Sikkim Nepal border. Phalut is located at an altitude of 11,811 ft. After a trek to Sandakphu, trekkers plan for an onward trek upto Phalut, before commencing the return. A small bunkhouse of the Indian Army can be found on the peak. The indigenous tribes that live near Phalut are called Phalutians. From Phalut, the view of Kanchenjunga appears gigantic and splendid. The view of ‘Sleeping Buddha range’ that consists of Kumbhakarna, Korbu North, Korbu South, Mount Kanchanjunga and Pandim is simply awesome. Phalut is a tourist attraction for adventure lovers as it is ideal for trekking.
