Purbo Bardhaman, is situated on the banks of the Damodar River. Purbo Bardhaman, also known as Burdwan or Barddhaman. Bardhaman is also the district headquarters, which was named after Tirthankar Mahavir Bardhaman, the 24th Jain monk. During the Mughal rule, the district was renowned as Sharifabad. The district is endowed with various tourist attractions which ranges from historical and religious places to environmental-friendly tourists destinations. Its unique and divine culture make the district stand out from all.
Curzon Gate, one of the most popular historical monuments in Bardhaman is located at the centre of the town at the meeting point of the Grand Trunk Road and B.C. Road. In the year 1903, Maharaja of Bardhaman, Maharaja Bijoy Chand Mahtab built this huge gate to greet and receive Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy of Bengal at the entrance of the town of Burdwan. In the post-independence era, the monument was renamed as Bijoy Toron . The spellbinding architecture of this monument was inspired by the architectural design of Gateway of India in Mumbai and an Italian sculptor worked on this. The pillars of the gate and the sculptures of the lions on the sides, the cornice, the three fairies at the top and the decorations surely grab the attention of tourists because of its finest sculpture. Previously, it was known as Star of India which was changed later. Apart from experiencing the mesmerizing archeological beauty of the Gate, tourists can enjoy Bardhaman Christ Church and The Sanskriti Metro Movie Theatre which are adjacent to the Curzon Gate.
